How to Make Wedding Shower Towel Cake

October 7, 2009

You may want to choose towels that match or compliment the bride’s wedding colors or even better to choose a color that will go well with the couple’s new bath.

“Ingredients” for the towel cakestudio563-cake2

2 bath towels

3 hand towels

2 washcloths

a cake board (cake stand pan or pizza pan)

safety pins

narrow ribbon, elastic or rubber bands

real or silk flowers

tiny string pearls or narrow lace

small wedding rings

cake topper

empty paper towel rolls (optional)

Step 1: Lay the bath towels out with ends slightly overlapped . Pin towels together and fold to a six inch width. Roll towels into a tight coil. You can roll the towels around an empty paper towel tube to add some stability. Fold the end of each coil under and pin closed. Ribbons can hide pins.

Step 2: Repeat step 1 with the hand towels (other directions use 2 hand towels, but 3 makes a more realistic looking layer.)

Step 3: Repeat step one with the wash cloths.

I spray a pizza pan white to use as a base for this cake but you can use a cake stand if you prefer.

Next you have to decorate the cake and here is where the fun begins. Give your imagination free rein.

Arrange the flowers around the bottom of each layer. I use silk flowers because they don‘t wilt but real ones can look lovely. Take one or two flowers apart and spread them over the cake.

I then attach the pearls and use them to create a scalloped look from the top of each layer. I take a tiny stitch to anchor the top of each loop. Narrow lace can be used here. Attach a wedding ring to the center of each loop.

How should you top your towel cake creation? I have seen these cakes with the traditional bride and groom. cloves or a bell or you can get creative. A single large flower or a mound of smaller ones A hand towel fan with pearls attached looks wonderful. A large bath puff looks great here. I dangle strings of pearls from the puff.

If the bride has chosen a rectangular cake you can still use this cake or you can wrap cardboard boxes or foam blocks like gift boxes then stack and decorate.

Striped towels when rolled will give the appearance of horizontal striped icing, which is unique.

We have made kitchen towel cakes using place mats, kitchen towels and dish cloths. napkins. I use placemats for the base, then the towels and lastly dish rags. With this kitchen cake a paper towel roll or wooden dowel will be needed to stabilize the cake.

Normally I use kitchen linen cakes for housewarming gifts but have also made them for showers.

You may be surprised to find your friends or the shower guests asking you to make one of these exquisite shower cakes for a party they are attending or asking for the instructions how to make wedding shower towel cake.

How To Choose Your Wedding Cake

October 6, 2009

One of my favorite parts about the wedding, is the cake. Over time many things have changed with weddings, but one thing that stays the same, there is always a beautiful cake. The wedding cake is a big part of the wedding, and something ‘everyone” remembers. So when deciding on which cake is right for your perfect day, there are many factors to take into consideration.white-on-white-wedding-cake

When is your wedding?

The date and location of your wedding is crucial when choosing the cake. For example if you plan on having your wedding in the summer at a hot location, things like mousse, or even ice cream cake might be out of the question Ask your baker what types of cake are in “season”

How big will the cake be?

Wedding cakes can come in all shapes and sizes. Traditional cakes which have several tiers are normally a great choice, and one your guests will remember. Depending on how many guests you have your options are limitless. Of course the biggest factor in deciding how large your wedding cake should be, is knowing how man guests you will have. The following website gives a great reference on how large your cake should be.

What’s your flavor?

Depending on the style of the cake, you have many different options. If the cake is multiple tiers, many people are choosing to have several different kinds of cake. Each level can be different, offering something for everyone. With wedding almost anything goes when it comes to the cake.

What kind of Icing?

Traditionally icing has been white or a light cream color. However today, many are matching their icing color with the overall theme of the wedding.. The actually icing can be a simple sugar and flour recipe, or even a rich cream cheese icing. There are many great icing ideas online which are sure to please even the most picky guests.

Decorations

Decorating a cake is only limited by your imagination. Some couples design the cake around the décor or theme of the wedding. While others give the cake a unique look, with crazy and outrageous decorations which define who they are. Most Depend on what you need, bakers decorate cakes with the look of lace, embroidery appliqué or elegant drapes or swag.

Your wedding cake should be as individual as you. The worst thing you can do when choosing a cake is just “settling.” Shop around a bit, decided on the cake, style and decorations, and find a baker who is willing to accommodate you. Many couples even order their cakes as much as 6 months ahead of time to insure they get what they want.

Cupcake Wedding Cakes

October 4, 2009

You have chosen one of the most fashionable types of wedding cake. Cupcake Wedding Cakes have become increasingly popular over the last year.

Now why is this? Well the answer is simple, individual tiers of cupcakes make the most beautiful and fun wedding cake statement. Brides, grooms and guests love them for so many reasons…client16

Retro – These little cakes have become popular with a generation of people who can remember them from their childhood. Just like those memories of our favourite sweets, which bring back calls of “Oh, I remember those.”

Cute – These adorable little cakes are just so cute when decorated and boy do you have a choice of decorations. These cakes can be topped with butter cream whirls, fresh strawberries, cute daisies or colourful sprinkles to name just a few options.

Colours – Because the choice of topping or decoration is so vast, it is easy to coordinate these little cakes into your colour scheme. You could opt for the beautiful pastel range, plain and elegant white or a more vivid colour palette such as hot reds or chocolate browns. Whatever your colour theme there is bound to be a cupcake topping to complement.

Flavour – Due to the unique nature of having individual wedding cakes it enables you to have a cake of many flavours. There is no rulebook out there on cupcake wedding cakes. You might decide to have all the same flavour of cakes, you might opt for two flavours or you might be unable to decide and have a cake of many flavours, the choice is yours. Some of the sponge flavours available for wedding cupcakes are: carrot, lemon, banana, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon and many more.

Versatility – Because of their individual nature these cakes are very easy to transport, display and serve. They also enable guests to choose a cake flavour if yours is made up of different flavours.

Size – Cupcakes mainly come in two sizes: small which is a traditional cupcake size and large which is more of a muffin size. Couples choose to either have all the same size or both!

Cost – Choosing to have a cupcake wedding cake is an inexpensive wedding cake option, so if budget is an issue these cakes will offer you a perfect budget solution.

The only other decision you have to make is how to display your beautiful little cupcakes. The most popular way to display cupcake for a wedding is on a tiered cake stand this is often referred to as a cake tree. It enables you to create the image of a tiered wedding cake and displays these cakes off to their full beauty.

If you would like to have a traditional photograph of the bride and groom cutting the cake, have a small cake sitting on the top of the tier for this purpose.

Looking For The Perfect Wedding Cake

October 3, 2009

There isn’t a wedding album out there that doesn’t feature the bride and groom cutting into their wedding cake. In fact, the entire wedding stops so that all the guests can watch the time honored tradition of cake cutting. If it is enough to stop guests from dancing and talking, then it should be treated with some lavish decorations.jewelled-wedding-cake

Before the cake cutting begins, the wedding cake is usually displayed, on a table of its own, for all the guests to oh and ah over. Let your guests oh and ah not only over the frosted, fruit filled layer cake, but the way the table is decorated as well.

Wedding cakes are not all tall tiered masterpieces anymore. You can have your wedding cake made in any shape and any size. You can even have cupcakes. With this in mind, if you have a small box cake, you want to choose a table accordingly. If your cake is smaller in size, don’t set it on a table that will overwhelm it, you want to highlight the confection.

Talk with the baker before hand, to see how elaborate the finished product will be. If your cake is designed with swirls and pearls, keep your decorations simple. A decorative table skirt may be enough to draw peoples’ eyes to table. If you have a simple cake, you can talk with your florist and they can decorate the cake with fresh flowers, even edible flowers. Scatter some flower petals around the base of the cake, or have smaller desserts like petit fours or pastries on either side.

Where will be the best place to position a cake so that it gets this much deserved attention? Near the bride and groom’s table, of course! Have the table set slightly off to the side so guests never have to take their eyes of you or your cake!

Unique Wedding Cake Toppers For A Unique Wedding Cake

October 1, 2009

While many couples today will choose a traditional wedding, often following in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents, a growing number of couples are electing to depart from tradition and frequently adopting less formal and more “fun” weddings.gamos_wedding_confectionery_weddingcakes_12

Whichever route you choose however one thing that you are sure to want is at least something in your wedding that sets it apart and that will make it truly memorable for your guests. In many cases you’ll find that this is not an easy thing to accomplish in terms of the civil or religious ceremony itself, but your wedding reception and, in particular your wedding cake, will provide the perfect vehicle.

Many couples are already moving away from the traditional white wedding cake and opting for cakes of various flavors, colors and shapes although, in most cases, cakes continue to be tiered to provide the height that is really essential if the cake is to command the centre of attention as far as the reception decorations are concerned. But why have just one cake?

How about individual miniature cakes which will not only impress your guests in terms of the imagination and work that went into making them, but will also make them feel that extra bit special at the thought that you had a cake specially made for them. This option has the added virtue of allowing you to offer a range of different flavors if you wish to provide for the variety of tastes amongst your guests and miniature cakes can still be arranged on stands into a tier to emulate the classical tiered wedding cake.

If you’re feeling really bold, how about dispensing with cake altogether. We’re all familiar with the elaborate displays that we see in the stores, especially around the holidays, with towers of chocolate chips cookies or gingerbread men and, while gingerbread men might not be quite appropriate, with a little imagination it’s not too hard to think of a variety of sweet treats that would make a stunning display at your wedding.

And why stop there? Once you’ve created your spire of eye catching desserts why not mix in other sweets or even fruit and provide your guests with a variety of dipping bowls alongside the display so that they can coat their chosen sweet of piece of fruit in bitter dark, smooth milk or even white chocolate for that perfect after dinner treat.

These ideas in themselves can provide you with a memorable and quite unique “wedding cake” but, for that final touch how about a unique wedding cake topper?

Toppers come in all shapes and sized these days and are not only designed to crown your cake but also to give you the opportunity to make a very personal statement and to provide a talking point for your guests. There is a huge range of wedding cake toppers available today in just about every price range, from mass produced plastic toppers to exquisite and unique wedding cake toppers that can be hand crafted from a range of materials including crystal and semi-precious stones. What better way can there be to express your love for each other and to display that love to your assembled guests than by symbolizing that love in a unique wedding cake topper.

Fall Wedding Cake Recipe and Decoration Ideas

September 29, 2009

The grand decoration, the scrumptious wedding feast, designer bridal gown, gold printed invitation letters – you have planned for them all.

But aren’t you forgetting something crucial?Murdoch 018

Yes! The wedding cake-the most delicious aspect of any wedding planning – adds extra zing to your wedding celebration and gives the invitees the sweet luxury to indulge in.

Here are a few ideas to make your fall wedding cake a hit with the guests with its unique fall feel and special fall taste.

When you are having a fall wedding, your wedding cake should also be based on a seasonal theme and rightly reflect the essence of the season both in taste and in its appearance.

While serving any type of cake in the fall wedding is at least grammatically correct-to keep with the true spirit of the season, serve your guests a delicious alternative to a traditional cake -a spiced cake or a spiced Chocolate Wedding Cake.

Here is the recipe for a spiced cake that you can get custom made by a renowned baker or someone reputed for baking skills.

In a spiced cake, the magic is done by your choice of spices – use 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice, 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger and1 teaspoon ground cinnamon for 2 cups all-purpose flour. Also use 1 cup of molasses.

Then there are the routine ingredients of traditional cakes such as sugar (1 cup), butter (I cup and softened), eggs (3), baking powder (2 tea spoons), and salt (1/2 tea spoon).

Follow the usual steps of cake making:

  • Mix butter with sugar and beat them with electric mixer until they form a light and fluffy mixture.
  • Add eggs, one by one into the mixture and keep on beating.
  • Now blend in the molasses.
  • Take a separate bowl and mix flour, salt, ginger, and cinnamon in it.
  • Add this mixture to creamed batter, beating at low speed all the while.
  • Don’t forget to add baking soda to the batter.
  • Now grease a baking pan and pour the batter into it; bake at 350° for 45 minutes.

If you want to come out with an even more stunning fall wedding cake, try a spiced chocolate cake.

You can use the same ingredients and follow the same steps as the spiced cake; only you will need some additional ingredients such as 1 and ½ cups of sour milk and at least an ounce of semi sweet chocolate.

Before adding the baking soda in the batter, dissolve it into sour milk and grate the chocolates before adding them to the batter.

Bring the fall feel with right cake accessories

  • Not the taste alone-the look and feel is also important to bring the seasonal touch. For that, use the decorating accessories only in the vibrant fall colors like flaming orange, golden, copper brown or burgundy.
  • Create the replicated fall leaves and pinecones out of sugar.
  • At the base of the cake, scatter pumpkin and squash pieces. Also sprinkle marzipan fruits and macadamia nuts for a more obvious fall flavor.

So now you have your spiced up, specially decorated fall wedding cake – share it with your friends and loved ones and take your share of the bites while hoping for a long, sweet, and spicy married life.

How to Order a Wedding Cake

September 29, 2009

One of the most special parts of a wedding reception is the cake. Often the centerpiece of the reception, you want your wedding cake to have great style, taste good, and fit in with your budget. Yet many brides go into the process having no idea of the basics of wedding cakes. Here is how to order the wedding cake of your dreams.wcakeCL165

There are two things that you absolutely must know before ordering your wedding cake. The first is the number of guests that you will have and the second is your budget. It is a given that you will not have an exact head count when you order your dessert months before the wedding, which is fine; a general ballpark should be sufficient for the baker. The price of a wedding cake can range wildly, anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand, so this is why it is important to have a firm budget in mind before meeting with bakers. You don’t want to fall in love with one of their designs only to find that it is ten times the price that you are able to afford!

It is smart to have a few other general things about your wedding established before ordering your dessert. You need to know the when and where, whether it will be indoors or outdoors, and what the essential style or theme will be. If you go into a meeting with a baker knowing at least that much, she should be able to walk you through the rest of your choices.

The look of your wedding cake should suit the rest of your wedding. For instance, if you are having a traditional wedding, wearing a classic gown and pearl bridal jewelry, you should also have a traditional cake, such as an all white buttercream. The accents can also tie in with your bridal attire; tiny frosting “pearls” can be used to create a delicate border on the edge of the tiers to mimic your pearl bridal jewelry, or you can have the baker replicate the pattern of the lace on your gown in fondant.

The indoor or outdoor question is a big one, because certain ingredients can stand up to being outside on a hot summer day, while others cannot. A fondant covered cake will do fine in the heat, but a buttercream or whipped cream frosting will melt and run by the time the dessert is cur, ruining the effect. Even if you do have a hearty frosting like fondant, you should never display a wedding cake in direct sunlight at the reception.

Your budget will have a big impact on the shape, size, and decorations on your wedding cake. The ones that you see in the magazines that are five tiers tall and covered with a profusion of handmade frosting orchids cost thousands of dollars, which is not what the average bride will spend for her dessert. However, don’t shy away from showing your baker designs that appeal to you, no matter how fantastical they may be. If you loved the grand orchid cake but found it too pricey, a similar confection could be created using fresh flowers on a three tier cake. A tried and true trick for saving money is to have a smallish display cake made to put out at the reception, but to also have the same flavor made in an inexpensive sheet cake to cut in the kitchen and have the waitstaff serve to guests. No one will be the wiser, and you will get to “have your cake and eat it too”.

Choosing Cupcake Wedding Cakes

September 29, 2009

If you’ve made the decision to use cupcake wedding cakes instead of the traditional layered cake for your wedding, then you’ve probably already been thinking about trendy, affordable, and easy solutions to your wedding planning.BEAUTIFUL WEDDING CAKE

But like all aspects of your wedding in the planning stages, you have to stay on top of things to make sure your desired choice becomes a splendid reality.

Here are some of the steps we recommend when going about choosing and ordering your cupcake wedding cakes:

Ordering Wedding Cupcakes

One of the things that makes cupcake wedding cakes easier than the traditional layered cake is the ordering. With the traditional cake, you have to be sure and order one slice per person, but a slice always depends on who is cutting the cake. Even if the baker and cake service cuts the cake for you (as is common for higher end bakers these days) the success of the order depends on how good they are at estimating size per person. We can’t tell you how many weddings we’ve been to where the first pieces of cake are huge and the later ones are small slivers!

For cupcake wedding cakes, we recommend ordering one cupcake per person, as well as an additional cupcake for every 10 guests. If you have 100 guests, that means you would order 100 cupcakes, plus another 10. This will make sure you have enough to go around, even for a guest or two that doesn’t want to stop at one.

Decorating Wedding Cakes

Whether you are going with a traditional wedding cake or cupcake wedding cakes, you want to be sure and be specific about the kind of decorations you want. You can choose something elegant, or something fun, or some really unique. The single greatest reason to use cupcake wedding cakes is the versatility they offer. You can choose just about any design, or even mix and match to create variety or a stunning display.

No matter what you choose, be sure and see a sample of it first, either one made by the baker for you or one from their photos of past work.

Homemade cupcake wedding cakes

Another reason a lot of us choose to use cupcake wedding cakes instead of the traditional layered cake is cost. Wedding cake prices are going through the roof, with a per slice charge of anywhere from $5 to more than $25 being the industry standards. Cupcake wedding cakes are more affordable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the way they make ordering hassles a thing of the past. One of the other reasons cupcake wedding cakes are a more affordable alternative is that just about anyone can do them!

The first step is to get ideas. To do that, look at pictures or find the right book. This is the easiest part and the most fun. There are a few images online from some of the more creative bakeries out there. Martha Stewart Living put out a cupcake book a few years ago with a fantastic display of cupcakes, especially cupcake wedding cakes. They also have a book just on weddings with fantastic photos. Home and Living magazines are also jumping on the cupcake bandwagon, and most of their spring issues focus on weddings in one way or another.

Then get your supplies and start to test out your skills. Nothing is too hard for a cupcake wedding cake if you just practice a bit. We recommend buying regular supermarket cake mix to start out and for the big day. Duncan Hines, Betty Crocker or any brand will do. If money is an issue, buy what is on sale and keep a look out for coupons. The same goes for frosting. We do recommend buying at least one heavy cupcake pan for your effort. This will make all the difference if you have to make a lot.

Of course, taste is the easy part, The hard part is trying our your decorating skills. Remember to practice well ahead of time and take notes on what works and what doesn’t. There are plenty of books and videos out there to tell you how to do the decorating, step-by-step demonstrations on how to make the perfect cupcake wedding cakes.
